Blooms and bunnies
We like this time of year. Spring is in the air and our stand at New Covent Garden Flower Market is bursting with colourful blooms – tulips, hyacinths, anemones, ranunculus, lilac and more.
Our Easter bunnies have also settled in nicely – we only started with two and now they’re everywhere!
After the excitement of Christmas the months of January and February often feel a bit subdued so this year we took the opportunity to trial something different – flowers from Japan! Visitors to the stand were stunned to see Japanese-grown dahlias, sweet peas, giant ranunculus and gloriosa brightening up their wintry UK mornings. Although expensive, the quality of these stems was exceptional.
The run up to Valentine’s was busy, as always. Roses are still the favourite bloom of romantics, and red roses the most popular of all. We love roses at Dennis Edwards Flowers – there’s so much variety there really is a rose for everyone. Popular red roses this year included the scented Naomi, the ever reliable Freedom and Grand Prix.
Mother’s Day is also annual highlight for us. Usually the flower market is closed on Sundays but this year we opened for Mothering Sunday. There was a good bit of publicity in the press about the Sunday opening but we were all rather taken by surprise at its success – record trading figures and the market bustling with customers like it used to be many years ago. What flowers do people buy their mums? They buy roses, narcissi, freesias, lilies and tulips.
We’re enjoying Instagram and are thrilled we now have close to 3,000 followers. To think people as far afield as Japan, the USA and Australia are taking an interest in us and our flowers is fantastic. The secret to our success is Dennis’ jokes, or at least this is what he likes to think!
There’s nothing more to say than to wish you a very Happy Easter. We’re open Good Friday and Saturday as usual but will be closed Easter Sunday and Monday. Come and visit us soon!
